The gimp wonders how much longer Kiryat Shmonah will be a safe haven for the good people of Sderot, Ashkelon, Asdod and the area kibbutzim. I find it somewhat ironic that we, who hold the world record for having had the largest number of rockets shot at us, (over 5000) since the late 1960s are now providing safety to so many from the south. My across the foot path neighbors are hosting a family from Ashkelon, and I know others with whole families from Sderot. No one misses the irony.
The hizzbullies have never hesitated to take advantage of an opportunity to shoot katyushas at us before, so I wonder what they are up to. Are Syria and Iran holding them back? Are they planning to use the tunnels they've dug to pop up on our side of the border to over run us? I actually know people who can hear them digging under their houses. Are they waiting for us to go in by land? Were they scared by the ferocity of our attack on Hamas? I rather doubt the latter is their reason for holding back. Speculation is rife in town and everyone is an expert. That is only to be expected as many have had 30+ years of experience with the hizzbullies and their katyushas. My guess is that the wheel has to go a little further around.
Watching the goings on in Gaza on the TV while not being in the thick of flying rockets is a new experience. It's almost fun to watch the weapons and ammunition they've hidden in civilian areas and even a mosque cook off. It is also interesting to note that poor deprived people of Gaza look quite well fed in spite of all the wailing that Israel is trying to starve them. Far from it. We are allowing shipments of food, medicine, and even ambulances (that they have been known to use to transport rockets and their launchers, (among other non medical emergency items) to move into Gaza. We haven't even cut off the electricity we supply them with.
Yet, we struck with disproportionate force.
I would also like to know if any other army has ever at any time phoned a targeted building to tell the noncombatants they are about to be hit, only to have them bravely run to the roof top to act as human shields. What does the evil IAF do in that case? No, they don't bomb the building anyway, which they certainly would be entitled to do after warning the shields by phone. Instead a small pinpoint mini bomb is aimed at a corner of the roof and the pilots wait until the ever so brave human shields scarper to safety. How's that for ruthless?
And yet, in spite of all this, we are in the wrong. Ok, there are a few countries that feel that we are well within our rights, in fact, obliged to fight back in order to protect our citizens, but, then, there's those bright bulbs at the State Department and UN who are trying to get the inSecurity Council to pass a resolution denouncing Israel's use of force against a terrorist entity. Huhn? I don't think so.
I wish I could trust our government to see this through to the proper end, but I don't. It's all politics as usual and they are talking cease fire. That's one language they should forget immediately. Any cease fire is a solid victory for Hamas and a resounding defeat for us. Even if Hamas were to allow observers from the EU or UN, they would be as impotent as Olmert. The arms smuggling would continue right under their noses as it did in Southern Lebanon and no part of Israel would be out of range of their rockets. No, the only option is to finish off Hamas. That will be the only deterent to the hizzbullies. The gimp is ready for just about anything. I have a full tank in the car, a stockpile of cigarettes, a good supply of water, and my usual disdain of katyushas. I'm ready for the long haul.
