Wakey wakey

The gimp wonders if the powers that be (but I wish weren't) in Israel are reading this blog, or if maybe I accidentally hit on a subject whose time is here, or on it's way.
I woke up this morning to our morning talk show and they were discussing the feasability of a constitution here. The subject does come every now and then, but that's all they do about it-talk. It was just a little strange to wake up to it so soon after mentioning it in a post here.
I wish now that I had paid a little more attention to what they were saying, but it was pre coffee so not the best of times of times to absorb anything new.
I have my doubts about a constitution every happening here, and if it ever does it will be nowhere near as good as the American one. It will be a mish mash of misguided left leaning liberal nonsense as they are the ones pushing for it.
I may be back with more on this subject soon. I'm going to take a swing through the Hebrew news sites to see if there's anything on it there, then, fall of the no news wagon and watch the 1900 'yack about newsy things' show.

Socialism and me

The Gimp wonders why it took so long to figure out why the socialist aspects of Israel don't bother me as much as they would if I were still living in The States, and I think maybe I've almost figured it out.
Israel was created largely by Jews who came here at the time of the communist revolution in Russia, and they also had a firm grounding in the Torah, from where they also got the whole Jews take care of at least their own. Well before 1948 founding of The State of Israel they had a mechanism for self government solidly in place. Unfortunately the first governments of Israel were made up pretty much exclusively of people from that pre statehood system and the bad, as well as good aspects became entrenched. Not a few came from the kibbutz-the last hold out of communism that has since realized that communism really doesn't work and have privatized.
What is now one of the last hold outs of that era is next to impossible to change simply because of it's structure. The power pyramid is upside down. There are 120 members of Knesset, all of whom run for election on a party list. There is no such thing as constituent responsibility. Some of the various parties do have something they call primaries to elect the party head and to sort candidates from their parties for placement on the list. The parties also 'save' list placements for certain candidates based on gender, and in order to get 'converts' from other parties or the private sector. That pretty much sucks eggs and as those same 120 members of Knesset are the only ones who can change the present system to a representational one, it will probably never happen.
I do think, however that as a nominally Jewish State we should be taking care of the less fortunate members of our society.
The Gimp wonders if she'll ever get it sorted well enough in her mind to be able to make more sense of it when attempting to write about it.
Of course a major difference between here and there is that we don't have a proper Constitution to misinterpret at every turn. That makes it easier to go our own often misguided way.

Universal health care

The Gimp wonders why no one ever brings up Israels universal health care scheme.
Oddly enough, it pretty much works, and eve Israeli citizen is required by law to be a member. There is a monthly deduction through the National Insurance plan (our Social Security) based on income. There are four providers that can be chosen from, and switching providers is allowed under certain conditions. There is also supplementary insurance that can be purchaced for additional coverage. It still amazes me that it actually works quite well. There are glitches from time to time. Some of the more expensive medicines, treatments and proceedures are not always included in the plan, but more are being added every year.
It's just a puzzlement that it's never mentioned when the subject comes up. It seems that only Canada, England and Cuba are ever used as examples.
The Gimp Wonders, What are we? Chopped liver? Wait. No. Don't answer that!

Emergency Intervention

The gimp is wondering if she can get a little help with a most distressing problem? We all know about Peppermint and Goshawk's joyful news. What most of you might not know is that Mr. Pepperhawk has gotten it into his head that what he might have to say about it is of no interest to his fan club. The Gimp is thinking that he needs some gentle persuasion to bring his mind around to the fact that we really really do want to get his take on things. Reliable sources have informed me that he can indeed take a time out from his Honey Do list to post on the new blog that could very well appear within the next few days. I know I've already asked you all to weigh in on an informal poll on the subject. Now I'm asking for outright applied pressure here, and at Pepps Place. He honestly seems to think that no one cares about what he has to say and we must prove him wrong, right?
I'm off on a shamless plug tour of Prpp's blog roll, so please help us persuade him that what he has to say is of interest to us before I'm forced to go the 'Foolish Man' route.
The Gimp thanks you.

Get a dictionary

The gimp wonders how on earth so many people can keep confusing what once were perfectly easily understood terms of proper English usage.
It is more than a little annoying that courtesy/manners are used interchangeably for respect. They don't mean the same thing at all. As I am not going to haul out my 40 kilogram English teacher's dictionary only to copy out the definitions of words we already know the meaning of, I will send you to your own dictionary of choice.
I will grant the point that they are closely related in so far as that anyone who is discourteous and lacking in manners will most likely neither earn nor show respect to anyone. I would even go so far o say that those lacking manners do not have any respect for themselves or others.
The terms are not interchangeable but they are related. Ok, guys, run with this. I have to go lie down. I think I'm having another heart attack. Of course it could just be stress. But, please, comment on...........
There. All better until next time. Amazing what a little rest will do!
As I was saying before I so rudely interrupted myself, those words are somewhat related but they are not synonyms.  I  think that before anyone can expect to be respected they must first  have good manners. Courtesy alone is not not enough but it is a start without which there can be no respect, mutual or otherwise.
Burt Prelutzky's piece from yesterday got me started wondering how so many commenters can be so so stupid. No, not the libs, the conservatives fell into too. Basic reading skills are needed now more than ever. Too few people  know what the topic was, never mind stick to it when commenting. He was writing about self esteem but it all got turned inside out by the 6th post.
The gimp wonders what you all have to say.

A few thoughts on a few topics from a meandering mind

The gimp has been wondering when, if ever, the insanity will stop over there.
The gimp also wonders why so many people have trouble with reading/listening comprehension. I think maybe they spin the clearest things to either distract or just because it's fun to get attention and deflect as many people's attention as they can.
Several recent instances spring to mind. One is the Rush Limbaugh thing. From this side of the pond/puddle it is pretty obvious that what he said was not only taken out out of context but twisted evilly to promote another agenda. Congress is clearly overstepping it's authority by even bringing it up. Too bad there isn't a test that  Federally elected politicians are required to pass in comprehending the Constitution. The language it's written in is English and quite simple to understand for any one with the reading level of a 6th grader.
Worse than the Congress folks are the Supremes (make that the whole judiciary). They seem to think that they can manipulate the Constitution to say what they want it say and completely ignore that there is in fact a way to make changes to that document. The problem with that is that it takes too long to add an amendment and they  want instant gratification.  Another reason, and perhaps the main one for ignoring the amendment process is that they know perfectly well that their desired amendments simply will not get ratified by the rquired number of states. I would like nothing more than to see some of their more unconstitutional rulings put to the amendment test. Goodbye Wade v. Row, ciao gun control and salamut to eminent domain and welcome to a renewal of public religious displays.
What is going on with the latter over there? No more Halloween because some dim witted Muslim parent doesn't like it? I don't like it either, but not for any crack pot religious reasons. When I was still living in Maine, we had Halloween parties at home because most of my kids friend's moms had issues with the trick or treat thing. We kind of thought the 'begging' aspect was one we didn't want our kids involved in. But we did have some serious fun and the kids loved it. In fact, the next day at school they were the envy of the 'trick or treat' crowd and had  many requests to be included next year.
I'm thinking about making a movie. How the Jihad Stole Christmas. Again, not my holiday, but come on. Who the blue blazes do they think they are to even consider sweeping Christmas under a rug. There is nothing at all offensive to any one from any part of that holiday. It's not mine, but I never ever would dream of trying to stop anyone from putting up a creche or a big tree. I don't even need equal time. I rather enjoyed the whole season when living over there. No where does the Constitution say that religious displays should be forgone. All it says is that no religion will be established by the Federal government. How anyone got the off the walls interpretation that it says anything about no prayer in schools or religious symbols on public property needs some quality time with my first grade teacher! The absolute farthest they can take the school prayer thing is to either exempt those who are not interested or to rotate it among the religions actually represented in the school, while exempting those who's turn isn't that day.. Why is that such a hard concept to grasp. And how does anyone get to banning prayer from there? Sorry. I just don't get it.
Americans who cave into all this ACLU-Islam coercion are just wimps. Stand up to them. Send them to remedial reading so they'll be able to understand the Constitution. Send the judges too, and give them tests to be sure that they actually understand the Constitution as it was actually written, not as they'd like to think it was written. Just how much farther will they get in their twisted interpretations?
The gimp sure does wonder.

                                   URGENT PETITION

It has come to my attention that Mr. and Mrs. Pepperhawk are settled into the life well enough for Mr. Pepperhawk to find the time to tell us all about it from his point of view.
Would all those who want hear from Mr. Pepperhawk nee Goshawk please speak up.
I am now going back to my regularly scheduled wondering.
