Ruminations on religion

The gimp wonders how a post at Crawfish's Swamp got things ticking over in my mind. Some things I just take for granted now that I'm so many years past my 'which religion is for me?' stage. I obviously came to the conclusion that the one I was born into and brought up in is. But that's not what I've been pondering for the last few days.
The question that has been occupying my waking hours is "What happened to religion and why did so many people stop believing in it's moral lessons? Ok, so that's two questions. I never claimed to be able to count.
What got me going on the subject was wondering if it had anything to do with people all of a sudden 'realizing' that maybe there was less to fear morally these days. It seems to me that maybe as folks started behaving less morally and nothing 'bad' happened to them, they decided that religious moral teachings were irrelevant to them, and became 'social moralists'?
Marx did say that religion is the opium of the masses, and he didn't mean Catholic masses.
Ok. That's the short version, and I'm not too sure I explained myself very well.
The gimp is still wondering on it, so, please, jump in and help me with this.

Guess Who's back!?

I'll write my next post in a day or two, but, the really big news here at TH is that  Peppermint is back with really huge news, so go over to her place at once.

Peace

The Gimp wonders where on earth the liberals among us got the idea that they and only they are pro-peace. Peace in and of itself is a wonderful aspiration. Perhaps the noblest of all the ideals humans desire. In fact I do not know anyone who thinks that peace is bad.
Ask any soldier anywhere in the world if he/she thinks that war (as the opposite of peace) is desirable. I doubt that there is a soldier alive who would not prefer peace to war.
If that is so (and I believe it is) how do we bring about an end to armed conflict? What happens if we just say, "I'm not going to fight over this."
Where does it leave us? I rather suspect that it will leave us at the mercy and under the control of those who are willing to use force to coerce  everyone else to bow to their power.
If we believe that ours is the way of morality and right, we are then obliged to fight those who would just as soon kill us to force their ways on us.
I guess that means that even though peace is preferable to war, there are circumstances when even lovers of peace must fight. The question then becomes whose 'way' is right (correct)?
That does not in any way mean that those who choose to fight like it and would not ultimately prefer peace.
The Gimp does wonder and in so doing, strives mightily to make sense out a topic that defies logic.

I GIVE UP AGAIN

The Gimp wonders how on earth things over here could be even more insane than they are over there. From the look of things most of the members of the Democratic party should be locked in padded rooms while still in very tight straight jackets. What is in the water over there? Is there no one with any common sense left (oops) in that party?
The contenders get worse each time an election comes along. Is someone offering a prize for worst candidate? They've gone from Kerry to Clinton, Edwards, and Barack. And Clinton goes from financial scandal to financial scandal, then she shoves her foot so far into mouth that it can be seen poking out the other end of her digestive tract by blatantly calling Gen. Patraeus a liar. If that's not enough there's Mr. Soros's blood libel equating a United States General to a traitor. Shouldn't there be a law against that? On the other hand, why bother? Things are so far out of control all over the world these days that it really won't make a difference.
The Gimp wonders why she even bothers wondering any more.
It's pretty clear that the whole world has gone nuts and there won't be anyone around to hand out promotions to condiments.

I GIVE UP

The Gimp wonders if it is even possible to figure out what those so called Palestinians in Gaza want other than the total destruction of Israel and every thing in the country.
Those idiot terrorists are whining that their electric power might be shut off while shooting at the power plant that supplies them, even as they refuse to pay their electric bill.
How long would YOUR electric company keep the power turned on if you refused to pay? Even after the funds to pay the bills were donated to you but you preferred to by guns and missiles? Not long I bet!
When our settlers were removed forcibly from Gaza, they left the infrastructure of many industries the Gazans could have used to build on. Instead they destroyed them, and now are crying that their economy is in a shambles. And worst of all this new set of lies is being accepted as Gospel Truth by the west.
What are we supposed to with a bunch of terrorists who like nothing better than to shoot homemade rockets at civilian targets? Ok, so they sometimes go for military ones too.  But mostly they just shoot indiscriminately. And we are supposed to give them anything they want?
I don't think so.

The Gimp wonders just how far the insanity will be taken in The States. A day doesn't go by that a new episode in the ongoing saga of "Americans Take Things Beyond The Boundaries Of Believability. I'm not sure when or where it started, but, I'm going to start my count with the Nifong scandal, which continues to this day. Are the judges over there in a competition to see who can give the most ridiculous jail sentence? Ok, so a sentence of 1 hour gets a felony with prison time served on the record, but so what? Is that the point of having a penal code? Among other things I'd like to know exactly when the prison time starts? Does it start when the felon gets processed into the prison itself, or when he surrenders himself for transport? If the latter, the sentence could well have been served before ever arriving, depending on traffic for prisons in cities. Ever seen where Nevada prisons are? Way out in the middle of the desert off I 80. A Nevada felon could  find himself serving much longer than it takes just to get there. If he sues for not being released on time what would happen? Or would they just release him on the roadside? If in a city, at a bus stop? I don't understand these short sentences.
The Gimp has also wondering how things got to the state where kids are threatened with criminal prosecution for 'fanny swatting'? Looking back there are a few guys from my junior high school who could still be in prison and registered as sex offenders for bra snapping. The girls' revenge had to do with fairy loops. Not a few of girls would be in it deep for that these days. What is wrong over there? Where did common sense go?
The Gimp is wondering (head scratch perplexity wondering) just where the demoncRats get off recommending who the governor of Utah should appoint to complete Craig's term before he even steps down. Something is not kosher there, not just the interference, but the whole case. Next time I'm over there, I will be sure to never use a public rest room. My left foot does an independent tap dance every time I sit down.
Is there no logic left over there? The Gimp does indeed wonder.
Now, get yourselves over to Peppermint's place. Fireworks over there in the very near future!
