The gimp wonders how and when we lost our belief in "innocent until proven guilty". It seems lately that any time anyone is mentioned in relation to just about any crime, that person's guilt is a foregone conclussion. We all seem to base our pretrial conviction on nothing more than heresay. He was there, he must have done it. And there's no smoke without fire. Of course, there is always the chance that the person could very well be guilty, but I prefer to with hold my judgement until I personally see some cold hard proof or until a jury brings in a verdict of guilty. And even then, I'm not always 100% sure. I do wish others would be less quick to judge. And if anyone is wondering, I am not in favor of the death penalty unless guilt has been proven beyond a shadow of doubt. I mean, there is absolutely no doubt at all, as in 100% certainty of guilt. Life imprisonment at hard labor is better than executing even one innocent person by mistake. A life sentence can be reversed if proof of innocense comes to light, a death sentense can not be reversed after being carried out. And it's just that simple to me.
The gimp wonders what you all have to say on the subject?

There's a difference

The gimp wonders why there isn't more discussion about the differences
between global warning and environmental polution.
Granted, I could be wrong, but all this global warming hype seems more than a little OTT to me. The Earth has been through how many cycles of warming an cooling? That alone should be enough to make to make folks sit up and scratch their heads every time The Big Bore opens his mouth on the subject.
Now, environmental polution. There's a subject you don't need scientific qualifications to understand. I'm no tree hugger, but I do think that we should be taking better care of this spinning sphere we inhabit. Dumping toxic wastes into our rivers, lakes, and oceans  is not a smart thing. Littering is just as not smart. There are ways to stop all those chimney stacks from belching poisons into the air we breathe. Stopping the current practices and cleaning up after they are stopped will be expensive, but most of it should be done, no matter the cost. The river that runs through my home town was so filthy that no fish could live in it, and it smelled really bad and the water was a strange foamy color. It's been cleaned up, but now some upstream historic polutors want permission to stink it up again. They probably figure that if it was cleaned up once, it can be again. We are killing ourselves and future generations.
Global warming should not be THE issue, polution should.
This gimp wonders if maybe the whole global warming thing might just be a diversion from the bigger issue of cold bloodedly killing our planet? They might be related, in as the cause(?) former is the cause of the latter,  but they really aren't  exactly the same thing.

Happy Fourth of July

The gimp wonders what everyone will be doing today. Picnics? Barbecues? Going to parades? Fireworks? Enjoying time with family?
I remember as kid in Maine having all the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins coming in from all over New England for a huge cook out in our back yard. We decorated everything in red white and blue, and Mom always baked a cake and frosted it like a flag. There were more than few discussions about if it was appropriate to cut and eat that flag cake. Of course, we always did in the end, just as we always cut and ate my aunt Mimi's flag jello mold. Those heated discussions always lead to somewhat more sedate talk about the USA meant to each of us.
Looking back at those Fourth of July celebrations from another country that I now call home, I am reminded of how fortunate I was to have been born, brought up and educated in America. I am sure that I would not be who I am today if it had been otherwise.
America (and my parents) allowed me to be different-to do my thing, and be strong enough to not bow to any kind of pressure to conform. Thanks to my American upbringing I have never been afraid to express my opinions freely. I was also fortunate enough to go through the local public schools at a time when they still taught the basics as well as how to think independently. From what I see these days, there is very little of the former and even less of the latter.
Thank you America, and God bless you and keep you safe in these perilous times.

Terror and elections

The gimp has been wondering lately if some Americans might just be selling themselves short. From this side of the Big Pond and with our political situation being what it is-a mess, I can but hope that the Yanks will be sending a much clearer message to Congress than the last two. That the members of Congress in both houses got it so wrong after the '06 midterm elections was truly mind boggling. After miss reading that one so badly they are now busy getting it wrong  yet again. After getting  resoundingly slapped down over Scamnesty, and getting nothing  else on their agenda passed, including defunding the war in Iraq, they are now desperately looking for something, anything to do.
I admit to being somewhat pessimistic about the '08 elections at all levels, but still hold out some hope that Clinton ULLC (UnLimited Liability Company) will not be moving back to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The killing of Scamnesty by a grass roots effort of citizens leaves some room for hope.
While the Islamic terrorist are sending messages to the world via the UK, and too many people are reacting like the Spaniards did, neither the Brits nor the Americans are at all like the Spaniards, and Gordon Brown is at least making the correct noises , so far. And the Brits are arresting terrorist suspects left and right.
Unlike America, they have an easier job keeping track of who is where and when they are there. Thing of it is, they never whinge and whine about losing freedoms because they were never guaranteed those freedoms by anyone, unlike the Americans who scream and shout about things that are perfectly acceptable in other countries, that use more effective methods in the name of their national security, than the average American will put up with.
Israelis have ID cards that the law requires us to carry at all times, security guards at the entrance to every single building, and outside venues in the country. Our security types can and do interrogate anyone they think might be in need questioning for anything they think they might need questioning about. Our airport security folks use profiling on all passengers, and most understand why. Our airplanes don't get hijacked or blown up. We are accepting of these things as we know that these methods are needed to keep everyone safe. I'm not saying that the US should start trampling all over the Constitution in the name of national security, but for heavens sake, a little common sense wouldn't hurt.
Again, the grass roots campaign to stop Scamnesty should be a clear message to all politicians that The People are the boss and their employees in the form of elected officials really should start listening to their bosses if they want to keep their nice cushy jobs.
I also think that there is a pretty good chance that voters on the conservative end of the spectrum will go out and vote, if for no other reason than to keep the 'demon'cratic contender out.
The writing is on the wall. I just hope the school system over there has turned out enough literate voters who will be able to read it.
Yes, this gimp does indeed wonder.
